England and Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps has been voted the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year for 2023.

The 30 year old was a crucial part of the Lionesses team that made it to the Women's World Cup final and bagged FIFA's Golden Glove award for being the best goalkeeper at the tournament.

After her win at the Sports Personality of the Year, Mary said: "I am honoured and humbled because I think this is the ultimate all-round sporting accolade. We have had a couple of incredible years, but this is just 'wow'.

"It hasn't been the easiest journey and I would not be where I am today without a number of incredible people in my corner."

She continued: "They have been with me through the really, really not so great times, but the last two years have been unbelievable and I have done more than I could ever have imagined and for that I am truly grateful.

"Thank you to my team-mates, and coaches I wouldn't be here without you all."

The other nominees for the 2023 award were retired cricketer Stuart Broad, jockey Frankie Dettori, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and golfer Rory McIlroy.

The nominees are decided by a panel of experts, with the public then voting on who will win, with Stuart finishing second and Katarina in third.

This is the third year in a row that a woman has won the coveted award, with fellow Lioness Beth Mead taking home the award last year, and tennis champ Emma Raducanu the year before.

Manchester City mens team also came out of the awards ceremony with a number wins under their belt, including Team of the Year, with coach Pep Guardiola winning Coach of Year, and footballer Erling Haaland taking home the World Sport Star award.

16 year old snowboarding champ Mia Brookes won the Young Sports Personality of the Year, and Fatima Whitbread won the Helen Rollason award, which is awarded for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.

Des Smith, one of the founders and Chair of Sheffield Caribbean Sports Club, was awarded the Unsung Hero award, and former footballer turned manager Sir Kenny Dalglish was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement.

This year's Sports Personality of the Year was hosted by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, and was attended by a whole host of famous faces included singer Jess Glynne, former Love Island star and boxer Tommy Fury, and former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington.
