Zelensky speaks at the UNGA about the death of Prigozhin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered an in-person address before the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday, marking his first appearance since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over a year and a half ago.
Canadian Ambassador to the UN, Bob Rae, revealed in an interview with CTV’s Question Period that there are discussions within the UN Security Council, which includes Russia as a permanent member, to arrange a meeting with President Zelensky.
The presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the General Assembly has added a layer of anticipation to the event.
Rae warned: “I mean, it’ll obviously be a moment of high drama.
“There’s talk that Foreign Minister Lavrov will be going, and that’s no surprise. He comes regularly to the UN.”

He added: “It’ll be challenging, but it’s necessary to hear what they have to say and to get a sense of how this public debate will unfold through the winter and into next year.”
It comes in the wake of meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, raising concerns about potential cooperation between the two nations in support of Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the European Union recently decided not to extend its ban on Ukrainian grain exports to neighbouring countries.
This decision has been met with opposition from these nations, who argue that it threatens the livelihoods of their own farmers. Russia had previously withdrawn from a UN-brokered deal allowing Ukraine to transport grain safely through the Black Sea.

Furthermore, a recent meeting of the G20 witnessed a softening of language regarding the Ukraine conflict among the world’s leading economies.
Ambassador Rae stressed the significance of Zelensky’s address, saying that it could make a difference in appealing to countries in the Global South, including India.
India, which hosted the recent G20 summit, has abstained from UN resolutions demanding an end to Russia’s invasion and has maintained a neutral stance while advocating for diplomatic solutions.
“We’ve been encouraging the Ukrainians to engage in as much global diplomacy as they can,” Rae said. “The challenge actually, really, is that there’s the Russian aggression.
“There’s also the impact of the war on the global economy and after the pandemic when many countries were very hard hit…climate change having a strong impact on developing countries. This effect on food prices, on gasoline prices, energy prices, even on food security and food availability, has been very, very dramatic.”
He added: “The reality is that this is a war that’s fundamentally about the future life of Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for its life. So, I think it’s a message that the whole assembly needs to hear.”
