World peace ‘hanging by a thread’ as ‘act of revenge’ could trigger World War 3

World peace is "hanging by a thread" after missile strikes hit Israel, potentially causing a European trigger from world powers who could escalate conflict.

An "entirely credible" scenario would see the Middle Eastern war brought to the heart of Europe through the likes of Russia, China and North Korea. Even the United States could get involved should missiles be fired at allied territory, according to Professor Anthony Glees.

It is a fear which is spreading to the US, with president Joe Biden and his chiefs of staff worrying over a "multi-theatre war" which would spread across the globe. The "potential catastrophe" mirrors that of the opening to the First World War, Professor Glees claimed.

Professor Glees warns of a "minor act of revenge" which could trigger a chain reaction which cannot be undone. It could lead to a World War Three-like event.

Speaking to the Daily Star, the professor said: "I think the peace of the world is, right now, hanging by a thread. There is a scenario which is entirely credible, a cascade of events that lead, one by one, into a more general war in the Middle East and then into a wider war in Europe.

"I do not think this war would be fought at once, and I do not think it would necessarily be fought with nuclear weapons. But I think it would involve the whole of Western Europe and Russia. It is possible that China and North Korea would seize what they would regard as an advantage but I'd put that to one side right now. It is Europe that should be the focus of all our attention and all our efforts to contain the crisis in Israel and Gaza.

"Last night we were told of US fears of a 'multi-theatre war' and the movement into the waters off Israel of the mighty aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford, surrounded by a flotilla of supporting warships, shows these fears should be taken seriously."

Further on from preparations outside of Israel comes controversial comments from president Benjamin Netanyahu, who warned the country's actions would "echo for generations". He added they were "fighting human animals".

His rhetoric, Professor Glees says, "is meant to sound like a threat to wipe out the Palestinians." He now worries whether or not history could repeat itself.

Professor Glees added: "One relatively minor act of revenge triggered a chain reaction which led to a World War. It is this that could repeat itself. If it doesn't it will only be because the great powers who got caught up in the maelstrom in 1914, do not want this to happen again. But events may be impossible to control.

"The reasons a wider war now cannot be ruled out are in plain sight. Israel was blindsided by a surprise attack which allowed Hamas Islamist terrorists (and they are terrorists, not as the BBC insists 'militants') to get into southern Israel to kill, torture and kidnap unarmed civilians, simply because they were Jews. Hamas wish to destroy Israel, it is their stated aim.

"The Hamas attack was not on the Israeli Defence force, or on the offices of the Israeli government. It was on ordinary citizens, the first stage of a campaign to remove Israel from the map of the Middle East."
