Prince William has visited the 1st Battalion Mercian Regiment as the Colonel-in-Chief for the first time following his appointment to the role by King Charles.

The Prince of Wales, 41, looked every inch the part as he donned camouflage military gear during his trip to the regiment, in the south west of the UK, today.

He was shown a ground map of the training assault before joining in with training exercises alongside the troops, including riding in an armoured vehicle.

The Prince was handed the role of Colonel-in-Chief to The Mercian Regiment in August after a reshuffle of the Royal Family’s military appointments by King Charles.

It saw William also take over command of his brother Prince Harry’s old Army unit, as he was named Colonel-in-Chief of The Army Air Corps, in which the Duke of Sussex served as an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.

King Charles, in his former role as the Prince of Wales, was the Colonel-in-Chief for the 1st Battalion of The Mercian Regiment before his son’s appointment.

William’s appearance comes after it was announced that the Prince and Princess of Wales will attend the 2023 Royal Variety Performance along with members of the Swedish royal family.

Kate and William will be joined by Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden and her husband Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday November 30.

They are expected to meet performers as well as representatives from the Royal Variety Charity, which supports those work in the entertainment industry in need of care and assistance.

The event, hosted by The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh, will see performances from Cher, a celebration of Disney’s 100 years and 2023 Britain’s Got Talent winner, the comedian Viggo Venn.

Casts of The Lion King, Frozen, Aladdin, Hercules and Beauty & The Beast will perform for the Disney anniversary.
